Long-tail guide / recovery troubleshooting
ChatGPT password reset not working
If the recovery link fails, the email does not arrive, or the new password is rejected, work through the official sign-in path carefully instead of using a third-party “reset” service.
Security first: do not send your password, one-time code, API key, session token, or cookie to anyone claiming to reset the account.
Check your original login method
If the account was created with Google, Apple, or another supported identity provider, use that same sign-in option. A password reset email may not be the right path for a social-login account.
Try these safe checks
- Open the official sign-in page directly and start recovery again.
- Check spam, promotions, and any alternate inbox folders.
- Use the newest recovery email; older links may no longer be valid.
- Try a private browser window with extensions disabled if the page loops.
- Check that your browser date and time are correct.
- Use the official OpenAI Help Center if the problem continues.
Do not confuse it with a usage limit
If you can sign in but a model says you reached a limit, a password reset is not a reliable fix. See ChatGPT usage limit reset instead.
