Account access / safe recovery
ChatGPT password reset: safe steps
A password reset is for account access. It is not the normal fix for a usage-limit message, a model cap, or a temporary service problem.
Safety rule: use the official OpenAI sign-in recovery flow or Help Center. A legitimate reset guide should never ask you to paste a password, session token, API key, or browser cookie.
When you actually need password recovery
- You cannot sign in with the email and password you normally use.
- You suspect that your password has been changed or exposed.
- The official sign-in page sends you to an account recovery flow.
Safe recovery checklist
- Open the official OpenAI sign-in page directly, rather than following an unknown reset link.
- Use the password-recovery option shown by the official sign-in flow.
- Check the inbox for the recovery email and verify the sender and destination before clicking.
- Create a new, unique password and store it in a trusted password manager.
- Return to the official account or Help Center if access still fails.
Password reset versus usage reset
If you can sign in but see “limit reached”, “too many requests”, or a model availability message, changing your password may not change the usage window. Start with the usage-limit guide instead.
What never to provide to a tracker
Do not submit passwords, one-time codes, API keys, session tokens, cookies, or screenshots that expose account details. The local usage clock needs none of them.
Official help
For account recovery, go to the OpenAI Help Center. This site is independent and cannot recover an account for you.
